School calendar: When do the September-October holidays end?
School pupils in South Africa are preparing to break up for the end of the third term.

Break-up day will be on Friday, 29 September.
But how long will learners be on holiday before returning for the fourth – and final – term?

In a change from previous years, all schools – both inland and at the coast will break up and return to school on the same day.
There is no longer a week’s difference between inland and coastal schools in breaking up and returning to school for the third term as in previous years.

To note: Inland provinces are the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, while the coastal provinces are the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

The fourth term will start on Tuesday, 10 October and end on Wednesday, 13 December.

The Department of Basic Education’s 2023 school calendar shows that this year will comprise of 199 school days across four terms, with 32 days set aside for school holidays and eight public holidays in between.

Inland schools
Term 1: 11 January to 24 March – Complete Term 2: 12 April to 23 June – Complete Term 3: 18 July to 29 September Term 4: 10 October to 13 December
Coastal schools
Term 1: 18 January to 31 March – Complete Term 2: 12 April to 23 June – Complete Term 3: 18 July to 29 September Term 4: 10 October to 13 December
